i would really like to see one day, a playoff of each state a big round robin tourney or something. lets see which state is the best really... for that year.
Before we have a national play-off, we'd need a state play-off to determine the best team in the state. I'm not convinced that it would always be the 8A champ. However, I don't think many schools would go for playing football into February, which is probably what it would take. Would be interesting and fun, though.
I usually post this about this time every year. Back when they started to talk about going to 7 classes (the skiped 7 and went straiht to 8), I said they should stick with 6 classes and have an elective class for undefeated or 1 loss teams only (a super classes if you would). Maybe even have a nomination process. The school nominates themselves, then there woudl have to be a vote by at least 5 of the 9 regular season teams you played sayingthey think you can compete.
It would run side by side with the others, be non-class specific (if Maroa or Plano wanted in, that'd be fine).
Heck, set the same senario up with Wisconsin, Indiana, & Michicagn, then get a rotating televised super midwest title between the winner of each state.

yes, i agree it would take enormous amount of time and effort to pull it together. but still would love to see it, and yes cgfbdad i do not believe the best in the state would be an 8A team either, there are so many really good teams throughtout this state and we only get to see a handful of them.
i think if we start small and do a midwest tourney it would catch on quickly.
Interesting concept, having an "open" class for anyone interested in competing. I think it would be a tough choice, though, particularly for smaller schools. Do you give up the chance to be 3A champ, for a chance to be king of the hill? Maybe it could be structured like the Chicago city championship; if you're eliminated from the open-class playoffs early enough, you can still get in on the individual class playoffs. Or, maybe we could have a 2 class final playoff for big and small schools; 1A-4A and 5A-8A. This would take only 2 additional weeks to crown the big and small champs. Any regional competition could also be divided into big and small school classes, and could probably be completed by early January. Taking that idea one step further, regional playoffs could be divided into several classes... Oh, never mind, I'm just rambling; anything like this would require too much coordination between states. We have a hard enough time dealing with our own issues here in Illinois, like the multiplier.
i am involved in dek, street, or ball hockey as it is called. i coach 2 teams, 7-9yrolds and 13-15yrolds. we travel to pittsburgh, canada, florida, boston, etc. it is really big on the east coast, anyway we have tournaments all over.
why couldn,t the high schools travel just like in college? ohman, couldya see the recruiting going on now!!!, every school not just privates could recruit your 8th graders.
but realastically, allot of the pop warner programs travel, we could do it like that, tournaments.
I heard that there is a rule about how far an Illinois team can travel, or travel out of state. Hence the reason you'll see a team from Cinncinatti or Kansas City play here, but not vice versa. I was told tha the state didn't want high school teams to turn in to traveling powerhouses. But after reading the IHSA by-laws & Policies teh only thing that I've found is that a team can travel as long as a student only misses one day of school.
